Breakfast

Luncheon Keynote Highlights:

Nicholas Carr
Author and Business Consultant

A former executive editor of the Harvard Business Review, Nick is an acclaimed business writer and speaker whose work centres on strategy, innovation, and technology. His 2004 book Does IT Matter? Information Technology and the Corrosion of Competitive Advantage, published by Harvard Business School Press, set off a worldwide debate about the role of computers in business.

Information technology in companies has progressed through two ages - the mainframe age and the client-server age. Now, at last, we are moving into the third age, the utility age, in which the Internet will truly take centre stage. The new age will overturn many of our assumptions about IT, creating fresh opportunities but also bringing new dangers.

Which Projects Come Next?
The Art and Science of Project Portfolio Planning

Project portfolio planning entails balancing resources, business needs, business risks and changing parameters, while at the same time maximizing the return on (project) investment. The project portfolio is the collection of all projects and programs at an enterprise or business unit to be performed in certain periods of time. The ultimate objective is to ensure alignment with strategic objectives in a best possible way.

This presentation will analyze the art and science of project portfolio planning. As both approaches have their strengths, the challenge is to find the synergy between them.

Professor, Segal Graduate School of Business

Visiting Associate, Oxford University

Managing Knowledge and Learning in IT Projects

Project teams are often comprised of experts from diverse fields who have not worked together before. Many will enter and then exit the team while the project is ongoing. In this context, a major job of the project manager is to ensure that knowledge transfer and learning occurs at the right time and for the right price. Active management of the knowledge within projects may make the difference between success and failure.

Professor Reich will outline the 4 kinds of knowledge in an IT project and the 10 areas in which knowledge risks occur.  She will also present the 5 principles and associated practices of knowledge management that project managers should consider integrating into their processes.

IT Governance Compass & Roadmap

Does your IT Governance strategy provide you with a detailed tactical blueprint for business value generation and linkage or is it merely a compass without a map?
IT Governance is responsible for understanding business objectives, legislative constraints and technology opportunities. To be effective, it must then take this knowledge and draft a master blueprint and architecture for how to build, run and improve the IT organization in such a way that it is clear how IT Services and their underlying technology and management disciplines support business outcomes. A key problem is that many organizations view the role of IT Governance as too heavenly minded to be of much earthly good.

This session will take a look at the practical outputs of IT Governance and how to tie activities at a tactical and operational level to business value generation. Without this linkage it is very difficult if not impossible to express how improvements in IT management practices and process area such as Change Management supports business objectives. Come to this session to learn how you can leverage and integrate best practice frameworks such as COBIT, ITIL, and CMMI effectively in the creation of governance blueprint.

The Value of Enterprise Solutions

Enterprise-class IT solutions have been perceived as expensive, complicated, and extremely resource intensive, accessible only to the largest of enterprises.  Their complexity, cost and time to implement meant only large enterprises had the resources available to undertake such an exercise.  Until now.  Over the last 5 years, the advancement of IT in areas such as broadband services, storage technology, virtualization and advanced processor technologies are making it easier and more affordable for Small  & Medium-sized Businesses and commercial businesses to access enterprise-class IT solutions.

Future Trends in Biometric Security

Government agencies and private businesses are investing in biometric devices that grant or block access after scanning fingerprints, eyes, facial features or vocal patterns.  The industry has grown from barely $300 million in 2001 to more than $2 billion last year according to the American National Biometric Security Project, a nonprofit consulting service. Fingerprint scanners have been installed at Walt Disney World theme parks in Florida to help block phony tickets. Iris-recognition devices in airports in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Frankfurt, Germany, are used to help move passengers more efficiently. Reid Gough, dean of the School of Technology at Davenport University, one of the first schools in the United States to offer degrees in biometric security, will offer his insight into the future directions of this ever more pervasive technology.

Finding the Green in Computing

Green computing, in some form, is mentioned in nearly every IT industry publication and forum these days. But the "eco" in eco-responsible computing has to have an economic side in equality with the ecological one. This session will describe specific techniques that help turn the altruistic intent of green computing into practical, economic considerations that will save money, save energy, and save the planet. Topics to be covered include priorities for energy savings projects; how much can you really save through consolidation and virtualization; impact of data center energy conservation on Green House Gas (GHG) commitments; integrating fuel cells and solar into data center energy consumption; e-waste disposal; and more. You'll leave with a whole new set of ideas on how to green up your computing environment.
